The Sun Enterprise 3500 is a Floor Standing expandable departmental server offering a high level of component redundancy and simple upgradability. The Enterpise 3500 supports up to eight processors and eight internal FCAL hot-swap Fibre disks.
The Sun Enterprise 3500 consists of a floor standing pedestal unit that support up to five expansion boards, three power supplies and up to eight FCAL hot plug internal Fibre Channel disks. The Enterprise 3500 requires a minimum of one I/O board and accepts a maximum of four CPU boards. Each CPU board can be fitted with up to two 167Mhz, 250Mhz, 336Mhz or 400Mhz UltraSPARC II processors. The Enterprise 3500 uses an enhanced 100Mhz Gigaplane system bus providing support for the next generation of UltraSPARC CPUs. As with the Enterprise 10000, the Enterprise 3500 will support Dynamic Reconfiguration (DR) and Alternative Pathing (AP) (some features are dependent on Solaris 7). All components are hot-swappable.
The 3500 uses a clock board which support both a 4:1 and 5:1 CPU to Gigaplane speed ratio. This means that older 84Mhz CPU/memory boards can be re-used in the Enterprise 3500 in conjunction with 400Mhz/8Mb Cache processors.
The first generation of 3500 servers shipped with a clock board which was only capable of operating in a 4:1 CPU to Gigaplane speed ratio. The clock board needs to be upgraded if you intend to run older generation 84Mhz CPU/Memory boards or I/O boards in these systems.
